  • The Mindy Project one-ups Seinfeld's allusive masterwork "The Contest" by sneaking in the back door.

Near the start of this week's episode of The Mindy Project—Mindy Kaling's rom-com-honoring/rom-com-spoofing sitcom set in a freewheeling gynecologist's office—we're plunged into darkness. Mindy and her now-boyfriend Danny are enjoying time together in bed, but all we hear are voices. “Oh my God, Danny, this is heaven," intones the voice of Mindy, before abruptly pitching upward. "Wait! Danny, Danny, that doesn’t go there!” Danny's response (and the episode's title): "I slipped!"

From this intro, "I Slipped!"—directed, it must be noted and celebrated, by Seattle filmmaker Lynn Shelton—dives into a 22-minute exploration of allegedly accidental anal sex in the context of a new-but-not-brand-new heterosexual relationship. Never are the words "anal" or "anus" used, and never does the comedy tilt brown, if you know what I mean. It was all perfectly, if elliptically, straightforward, with the deeply personal, edgy-for-TV topic bouncing off the show's love of cliched rom-com tropes hilariously.

But—surprise!—not everyone enjoyed it. The day after the episode aired, the Catholic League weighed in with its official statement. Entitled "ANAL SEX THRILLS 'MINDY'" (all caps theirs), the press release finds Catholic League president Bill Donohue denouncing the episode thusly:

Binge drinking, like anal sex, is potentially lethal, but Hollywood only has an interest in promoting the latter. That’s because of the large number of homosexual writers who work there. Catholics would appreciate it, however, if they would keep their dark secrets in the closet, where they belong.

Got that? Catholics would appreciate it if you followed their lead and kept all mention of anal sex locked away in darkness. (And should a mention escape, just transfer it to another diocese.)

In closing, a joke from "I Slipped!," which occurs during Mindy's initial grilling of Danny on his alleged slippage and doubles as a preemptive response to the Catholic League:

Mindy: Okay, so you’re innocent? You had no intent?
Danny: Of course no intent. I’m Catholic. Even if I think about that…
Mindy: They promote you to cardinal?
