  • Cinerama is now sporting a mural!

The word from the people at Vulcan is that the Cinerama is reopening on November 20 with a grand screening of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1. (The theater closed for renovations on August 4.) There have been some not insignificant changes in the place, which I will describe in a future post. But for now what I can say is that the new mural on the wall that faces Fourth Avenue is by, to use the words of this paper's art director Aaron Huffman, the "local design superstars Invisible Creature," and the display of the movie memorabilia from the Paul G. Allen Family Collection survived the changes inside. Indeed, the last time I was in the Cinerama (around early January), I saw in the case of glass the beautiful and transparent raincoat that the sexy replicant Zhora (Joanna Cassidy) wears when she is mercilessly executed ("retired") by the replicant that does not know it is a replicant, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford).

I have not fully decided which theater I like more: The Egyptian or the Cinerama. But I'm happy to live in a town that has both of these world-class cinemas.
