- Brendan Kiley
- "Gentrification is another way of saying black lives don't matter," another speaker says. "We have to get organized." He references and paraphrases the Frederick Douglass quote from 1857: "If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters... Power concedes nothing without a demand."
- Brendan Kiley
- Kshama Sawant: "We are not surprised by what happened but we are angrier than we were before... The ruling class, the government, is not on our side... We need civilian review boards in every city, including Seattle... We need a movement for economic justice... We need a new black freedom movement in this country... Malcolm X said you can't have capitalism without racism."
1:48 PM: Brendan Kiley reports:
One of the speakers says "we got to stop meeting like this," to protest police killings. Another, a pastor, says that Brown's parents will start federal action against officer Willis, claiming that he violated their sons' civil rights.

- This speaker says there was, in fact, an indictment last night: an indictment against the young black people of America. He says we keep being promised change and not seeing any. He says, "I don't think they take us seriously!"
- Brendan Kiley
- "While they're having the conversation at City Hall, we're having the conversation in the street. We're having the conversation on the corner."
1:35 PM: Brendan Kiley, reporting from the courthouse downtown, says "the crowd is amassing on the steps to hear speakers." They're chanting "black lives matter" as they wait.
