  • This morning, these roofs were covered in ice—the thaw is underway.

Remember Seattle a week ago today, when people were walking around without jackets and using the word "balmy"? According to weather guru Cliff Mass, in those days we were breathing air that had been sent over from Hawaii. In 24 hours, the wind shifted and the Arctic came to us—suddenly, we were breathing air that was coming down from the Yukon.

We've been getting some sun with our cold while our typical grey drizzle moved to California, which needs a lot more of that to make a dent in its drought and wildfires.

But the thaw is underway (if you haven't been outside in the past couple of hours, you might be pleasantly surprised when you step out the door) and it looks like clouds and rain are coming back this weekend.

From the National Weather Service:

Saturday should be back into the low 50s.

Since things are warming up, it's probably too late to take Cliff Mass's advice to beware of bridges, but his post on the subject is still worth reading—particularly the part about cars happily crossing icy bridges then finding themselves flipping over when they hit the warmer pavement on the other side.

And if you're hungry for more weather news, here's some—with geopolitical implications!—from around the world.
