SpaceX will not be slowing its roll. The company announced this afternoon that it's raised $1 billion from Google and Fidelity "to support continued innovation in the areas of space transport, reusability, and satellite manufacturing." Translation: The Seattle office—or, Redmond office, more accurately—will be supported by an enormous new flow of Google dollars, in part.

ICYMI, SpaceX founder Elon Musk explained at a private event last Friday that he wants to create a fleet of 4,000 small satellites to build an internet network in space. The hope, of course, is that by doing so, Musk's operation will also greatly improve communications here on Earth. GigaOm compared the idea to Google's Project Loon, a venture that would deliver internet to underserved areas by floating a ring of high-altitude balloons around the planet.

Musk said he expected the entire project to cost between $10 billion and $15 billion. The internet space race is on.
