Now that Chris Christie has come out against Big Government Vaccines, every Republican presidential prospect is going to be asked about them. Senator Rand Paul today said he thought most vaccines should be "voluntary," and when he was pressed on that, he expressed surprise that it would be considered "unusual" that he's for "freedom." Paul went on, "Here's the thing is, is that I think vaccines are one of the greatest medical breakthroughs that we had. I'm a big fan and a great fan of the history of the development of the smallpox vaccine, for example." Paul says that "public awareness of how good vaccines are for kids and how good they are for public health is a great idea... but I don't think there's anything extraordinary about resorting to freedom." Paul then goes all in on the myth that vaccines cause autism: "I've heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound medical disorders after vaccines. I'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea, I think they're a good thing." He concludes, "The state doesn't own children, parents own children."
