1. In the film section, IJEOMA OLUO exploits a seemingly innocuous Kevin Costner movie, transforming it into another opportunity to complain about race relations in America. What kind of spirited racial discourse was Oluo expecting when she attended a screening of a Kevin Costner film? Has Costner starred in anything worthwhile over the past two decades? Did Oluo enter the theater expecting to see racism solved by the end of the film, or is she just swinging a bat at an infirm old man who doesn't know any better?

2. LAEL HENTERLY contributes to The Stranger's Tumblr-level social discourse with an extended story about a black man who was found guilty by a jury with no black people on it. What, exactly, is this piece supposed to be arguing? Should only all-black juries be used in trials involving black defendants? Is that not ultimately a racist proposition? Given the racial makeup of King County—census data proves it to be overwhelmingly white—isn't it unrealistic of Henterly to expect a racially mixed jury?

3. In the music lead, LARRY MIZELL JR. contributes an especially well-written piece about the importance of an R&B musician. Which makes this week's edition of Mizell's regular My Philosophy hiphop column even more confusing. One piece is beautifully written and evocative. The other is loaded with jargon and the presumption that the audience understands the esoteric information he's writing about. The quality of the two pieces could not be more disparate. What is going on here? Are there two Larry Mizells Jr.?

4. Lest Henterly accuse this column of being racially biased, it's important to note that DAVE SEGAL's Data Breaker column is just as unreadable as the one written by Mizell. Could anyone translate this sentence into English? "Anyway, this show is serious business, for it is MOTOR XXI, and Vessel (Sebastian Gainsborough) and Container (Ren Schofield) rank among this country's most accomplished producers of dirty and dissonant techno." Who are these people? Is "dirty and dissonant techno" a good or bad thing? Who knows? Perhaps if Mizell and Segal were to switch columns for a week, both columns would miraculously be written in plain, understandable English?

5. In this week's Drunk of the Week column, KELLY O proposes a poetry contest. In your opinion, is she doing this because she hates herself, her readers, or both?
