But Willie, I Do love you!
But Willie, I Do love you!

For some reason, over the past couple'a days, I've been obsessed with Willie Cobbs's now-well-worn R&B standard, "You Don't Love Me." Listen to this, and you will be, too:

Though the song is an obvious rewrite, Cobbs said he heard someone singing what would become the chorus and took his inspiration from there. Uh, sure thing, Willie! Turns out, the song was distilled from two Bo Diddley tracks: "She's Fine, She's Mine" and "You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care)." That guitar/harp line in "She's Fine, She's Mine," well, I can't pinpoint its first appearance on record, but I do think it's one of those decades-old and often-reused blues guitar/piano/harp lines. No matter, Cobbs's remake is a contender, a bit more "stroll-ful" shuffler than Diddley's songs—"You Don't Love Me" feels like an update for city folks. I'm also real fixated on the MANY cover versions of the jam—my faves being the Megatons' instrumental take released as "Shimmy Shimmy Walk," the loose-groover take by Junior Wells, AND the biting longhair version by Quicksilver Messenger Service.
