Spotted outside a building at 16th and Pike...

"Gentrification isn't a good thing," writes someone who follows me on Instagram. "But this building is not an example of it. It has been a coop for 65 years, it is one of the more affordable buildings in this city. Residents are diverse in race, sexuality, and age, and many have lived here for over 20 years. Gentrification would be the removal of this building and its residents."

Some would argue that long-term residents selling units they bought 20 or more years ago at a huge profit to the less racially, sexually, and age-ally diverse condo/co-op buyers currently swarming Capitol Hill is an example of gentrification—the building won't be removed, the current tenants will be. But I personally don't begrudge them for cashing in.
