TPM:

The phase-out brigade is back! But now instead of George W. Bush wanting to phase out Social Security, it's Jeb Bush wanting to phase out Medicare. The former Florida governor opined Wednesday on the future of Medicare, a program he said "we need to figure out a way to phase out.... I think we need to be vigilant about this and persuade people that our, when your volunteers go door to door, and they talk to people, people understand this."

Yes, Jeb!, please instruct your campaign volunteers to tell people, as they go door to door over the next year and a half, that you wanna be president so you can phase out Medicare, which provides health insurance coverage for people over 65 and for the disabled—lord knows Hillary Clinton's volunteers will be telling voters all about your plan to phase out Medicare as they go door to door. Don't get me wrong: I totally support phasing Medicare out—but only if we replace it with a single-payer health-care system. Why not propose replacing Medicare and Obamacare with a health-care system modeled on the one they have over in Israel? That country that can do no wrong so far as American conservatives are concerned—so, hey, how do Israelis do health care?

Take it away, Wikipedia:

Health care in Israel is universal and participation in a medical insurance plan is compulsory. All Israeli citizens are entitled to basic health care as a fundamental right. Based on legislation passed in the 1990s, citizens join one of four health care funds for basic treatment but can increase medical coverage by purchasing supplementary health care... All citizens doing their compulsory military service in the Israel Defense Forces have all their health care costs covered by the military, including up to two free abortions for female soldiers.

Universal coverage! Health care as a basic right! Compulsory enrollment! And taxpayer-funded abortions! Sign us up!
