The Central District's Fat's Chicken & Waffles is now open in the longtime home of Catfish Corner.

Now Open
• Chef Maximillian Petty, a Bothell native who built a solid culinary reputation in Austin, has brought his "avant-garde, New American" cuisine to Eden Hill on Queen Anne. The menu of small plates at this 24-seat restaurant includes dishes like octopus terrine, “crispy pig head candybar,” and “duck duck goose,” the latter of which involves a duck leg confit crepe with prosciutto and foie gras.

• Marcus Lalario (Li’l Woody’s, 95 Slide) has taken over the Central District space that was home to Catfish Corner for nearly 30 years, given it a structural upgrade, fresh paint job, and '70s vibe, and turned it into Fat's Chicken & Waffles, a New Orleans-influenced eatery serving fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, and fried okra. He’s also added a beer, wine, and cocktails to the mix, as well as a tiny bar. As a nod to the building’s history, there’s also fried catfish. Fat's has been "softly" open for dinners the last week or so, but will officially be beginning next week.

• Heyday brings the Mount Baker neighborhood a much-needed family-friendly restaurant serving solid comfort food. Owned in part by Gary Snyder, whose Geraldine’s Counter is a fixture of Columbia City, Heyday’s menu (created by chef Melissa Nyffeler, of the late, great Dinette on Capitol Hill) is all about burgers, made from all kinds of proteins: the Saigon burger made of beef, pork, and shrimp, smoky lamb, jerk chicken, and a housemade “beety bean” made from beets, beans, mushrooms, and nuts. Purists will appreciate the classic burger, made from a third-of-a-pound of grass-fed beef.

Opening Soon
• Tomorrow at 3 p.m., Super Six will open its doors in Columbia City. It will serve the same Hawaiian- and Asian-influenced food (think kalbi beef, kalua pork, and kimchi fried rice) that have helped owners Kamala Saxton and Roz Edison (Marination Mobile, Marination Station, and Marination Ma Kai) build a loyal following.

I'm a fan of the Marination restaurants and expect the food at Super Six to be even better, as Saxton and Edison brought in chef Mark Fuller (whose restaurant, Ma'ono, serves up the best Hawaiian-influenced food in town) to consult on the menu. Envisioned as a neighborhood joint, Super Six will also offer morning espresso service, weekend brunch, a full bar, and a big outdoor beer garden.

Now Closed
• Over the weekend, the Byzantion, the Greek restaurant that occupied a space on the north end of Broadway for 30 years, served its final bowls of avgolemono and plates of slouvaki. CHS reports that owner Sotiris Bekris has decided to retire; they also report that a new bar, Spirit Animal, from two former Percy's bartenders, plans to open in the space in early 2016.
