Whoa! The San Diego Union-Tribune has the scoop:

SeaWorld intends to phase out its longstanding killer whale show at its San Diego park next year as part of a comprehensive strategy unveiled Monday to re-position the embattled company amid persistent criticisms of how it treats its orcas.

The Union-Tribune points out SeaWorld also has parks in other places than San Diego:

While it's possible the killer whale shows could come to an end at SeaWorld's two other namesake parks, in Orlando and San Antonio, no mention is made of that in the company's online presentation.

Meanwhile, in other news, last Friday a U.S. congressman from California announced he's introducing a bill that would:

prohibit the breeding of captive orcas, end the capture of wild orcas and stop the import and export of the killer whales. The bill, if approved, would put an end to shows across the country featuring the marine mammals once the existing whales in captivity die.

Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist, says the bill's chances of passing "are not fantastically high." She told Gawker by email, "Regardless, it sends a strong message, to the public display industry and the states with captive orcas, that this is a public interest matter, solidly in the mainstream."

Miami Seaquarium, where Lolita is housed in a pool that's only as deep as she is long, is not a SeaWorld property.
