As Ansel mentioned in the Morning News, Bauhaus Books and Coffee, which opened in 1993 on the corner of Melrose Avenue and Pine Street on Capitol Hill, has closed. Owner Joel Radin announced the closure in a note posted on the cafe's front door, as well as on its Facebook page. Since early 2014, Bauhaus had been operating two blocks away while its original home is being converted into a new, eight-story, mixed-use building. The plan was for Bauhaus to move back to its original location once the construction was completed, just as Bill's Off Broadway, which closed and recently reopened in its original location a few blocks away, did.

But according to Radin's statement, "due to unforeseen events and the knowledge that we are not able to move back to our original home, we are forced to close our doors." Bauhaus has two other locations in Ballard and Green Lake, but its original location in Capitol Hill will be sorely missed. As Dominic Holden described it in this piece a few years ago, "Bauhaus is a cultural anchor—a sort of neighborhood living room."

But as Capitol Hill taketh, it also giveth back—sort of. In brighter news, Charlie's, the 40-year-old Broadway institution that closed its doors in June, much to the dismay of the neighborhood, has announced that it is reopening tomorrow, December 10, at 3 p.m.

Charlie's longtime owner Ken Bauer is no longer involved in the business, but the bar and grill has been revived by new owners who also own local chain the Lodge Sports Grille. According to co-owner Kelli Kreiter, rather than reimagine the restaurant, the group was instead compelled to refurbish it. The space and menu have been revamped, but they have tried to keep as much of the spirit—and decor—of the original Charlie’s intact. Along with Charlie’s' classics, such as all-day breakfasts and deep-fried cheese sticks, “you will still find an inviting kitschy atmosphere, friendly neighborhood quality service, pool tables, pull tabs, [and] all of the pieces of memorabilia.”

Charlie's will celebrate its grand reopening on Thursday with an all-day happy hour.
