Glenn Ligon and ‘Mars vs. Venus’

Why: At some point, Greg Kucera’s name became consonant with fanciness. It is true that his gallery represents Big Artists. But in the late 1980s and early ’90s, when the Culture Wars hit DC and Brooklyn, he brought them to Seattle, mounting politically scorching, anticensorship, antibigotry shows—and this strain is an enduring part of him. Which is why you should pay attention—and look for the firebombs as well as the nuances—when he organizes a group show (artists both Big and smaller) about race and gender. What’s that naked bimbo doing on that pedestal? Who’s that black graffiti artist who “nobody killed”? (Greg Kucera Gallery, 212 Third Ave S, www.gregkucera.com, 10:30 am–5:30 pm, free)
