The “izakaya” is a revered Japanese version of the European pub or cafe—a place where people go after work or before a show to drink and eat. The word is a compound of “i” (to hang around) and “sakaya” (sake shop). During happy hour, Kaname serves the cheap izakaya classics that will satisfy vegans and omnivores: pickled vegetables, tempura everything, deep-fried gobo root, fried chicken, onigiri (rice balls with fish or vegetables inside), edamame, cheap sushi rolls, miso soup, and cocktails made with the Japanese firewater known as shochu.
