Every single pastry at Cafe de Lion is special and you should eat them all. You will have to travel all the way to the top of Queen Anne Hill, and you might have to clear an inordinate amount of happy families with strollers out of your path along the way, but I promise it will be worth it. Imagine a tender chestnut burrowed in a dollop of whipped cream, shrouded in a delicate nest of Earl Grey–infused chestnut-paste threads, all sitting happily on an almond tart. Or a rainbow-colored stack of real French macarons made with house-ground almond flour. Or the Mont Rosa, with chocolate mousse peppered (literally) with perfectly pungent pink peppercorns. Owners Daisuke and Tomoyo Miura try to make every component of their Japanese-influenced pastries in-house, even the food coloring—Tomoyo does it herself using finely ground dried fruit. Get to the top of that hill ASAP. (Cafe de Lion, 1629 Queen Anne Ave N #102, 913-2125, 11 am–7 pm)
