Sarah Vowell’s writing is blindingly smart and funny, and her voice is among the most fun to listen to in the history of the English language. She’s a beloved and best-selling author of pop-history books (most recently on Hawaii), but I fell in love with her on the radio, where hers was some of the best nonfiction storytelling This American Life ever produced. Go listen to her 2003 story on June Carter and Johnny Cash; it’s only 10 minutes long, but its perfection is so total it renders the star-studded, Oscar-winning, two-hours-plus 2005 film of the Cashes’ romance totally unnecessary.
