In the late ’90s, the bizarre and stunning noise-pop of Neutral Milk Hotel conjured two works of fascination that seared themselves forever into a generation of listeners. Shortly after releasing the second, 1998’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, NMH catalyst Jeff Mangum abruptly retired and essentially disappeared. Last year, he returned to the world, and reports of his appearances include words like “riveting,” “eerie,” and “hair-raising.” Sounds like the first time you heard the records. I heartily concur. He was lovely last night -- odd, but you knew that. Nothing like Neutral Milk Hotel -- this is just him sitting with a guitar, and occasionally the assorted Elephant Sixers with him stroll out and add a little French horn or trumpet or oboe or drum. And a thousand people in the audience sing backup.

Bought tickets for both nights cause who knows if he's gonna vanish for another 13 years. Am so glad I did now because last night- even way up in the nose bleed seats- was indeed magical.

While the show last night was good, there's something lame about someone going off stage for an encore after less than an hour.
