In the late 90s, the bizarre and stunning noise-pop of Neutral Milk Hotel conjured two works of fascination that seared themselves forever into a generation of listeners. Shortly after releasing the second, 1998s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, NMH catalyst Jeff Mangum abruptly retired and essentially disappeared. Last year, he returned to the world, and reports of his appearances include words like riveting, eerie, and hair-raising. Sounds like the first time you heard the records.
