This superb Norwegian trio brings to jazz the exhaustion, world-weariness, and pop-culture melancholy of post-rock. What separates them from, say, Alpha or the Tindersticks? These other groups start with post-rock or triphop and end somewhere close to the surface of jazz. In the Country begin completely with jazz and end with the kind of rock that makes you feel that the world has been around forever. The solos by Morten Qvenild, the trio’s leader and pianist, often sound like the ghost of Keith Jarrett, or Herbie Hancock, or Chick Corea (all of whom are alive, by the way).
