This Independence Day, a painting show in Pioneer Square goes to show that all explosions of color are not created equal. Portland artist Marie Koetje’s bright abstracts are hippie to LA-based Mark Schoening’s heavy metal, folk to sci-fi, domestic to documentary. Schoening seals layers upon layers of stencils, prints, and glitter under smooth resin. Tiny details of debris hurtle out from each painting’s central explosion, but none of them is quite identifiable despite their precise shapes, which look like sticker type laid down on the surfaces. Koetje’s paintings are loose, funny confections, thick with frostinged rainbows and messy drips and sprays. Fireworks for all.
