The meat sold in this small Columbia City business is always solid. Sausages, steaks, hamburger patties, sandwich meats—all solid. But the thing that sends my senses to another place, to another realm of pleasure is the potato salad. Sold in small, transparent containers (each costing about $2.50), the potato salad is not heavy, not thick, not dense, not eggy, not chunky, not complicated. It simply goes down like a song. I also love the landjaeger—a buck-fifty a stick. (Bob’s Quality Meats, 4861 Rainier Ave S, www.bobsqualitymeats.com, 10 am–6 pm)
