Annie Bissett’s fierce take on issues like gay marriage and poverty is made more moving by the fact that she does it in the delicate medium of Japanese woodblock prints. Her newest series, Loaded: The Language, the Promise, the Curse, and the Language of Money, is a skewering of the have/have-not divide. Each print features two related but opposed phrases, such as “Hand to mouth” and “Hand over fist.” One is in a handwritten script lifted from letters from her hardworking father, the other in the font on the dollar bill.
