The great thing about living in a big city (and this is indeed the definition of a great city) is that you have access to other cities, worlds, and times. Brazil Novo, a band that frequently performs at Vito’s and the Sorrento Hotel, provides Seattle with access to the city of Rio de Janeiro in the ’50s and ’60s, the peak years of bossa nova (João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and more). To ensure the authenticity of this access, and to provide Seattle with a close-to-real sense of Rio—its colors, its mid-century moods, its lovers on the beach—Brazil Novo’s vocalist, Michel Navedo, sings in Portuguese.
