Walter Kirn

Why: I’ve always loved Walter Kirn’s novels, but this is his best book yet. Blood Will Out is the true story of Kirn’s long friendship with an eccentric man called Clark Rockefeller. He convinced Kirn (and everyone else) that he was a blue-blooded art collector—one of the Rockefellers—but the world eventually discovered that “Rockefeller” was actually a scheming con artist with a murderous past. If Blood were a novel, you’d throw it away at the first unbelievable coincidence. Instead, Kirn keeps you shaking your head in awed disbelief the whole damn time.
