Back in January, the Freedom Education Project Puget Sound won a historic victory—the group, organized by college professors who go into women’s prisons to teach, convinced Tacoma Community College to accredit those courses behind bars. This was huge, giving prisoners credit for work they were already doing and some agency in climbing toward a post-prison life. FEPPS is new but growing quickly and already achieving big things. Tonight’s benefit concert stars bands from EMP’s Sound Off! competition: the pretty, crystalline harmonies of Cumulus; the light garage psychedelia of Fauna Shade; and the peppy, almost Shins-like pop of the Female Fiends.
