An enigmatic, endlessly bleak rap crew out of Memphis in the early ’90s, Three 6 Mafia specialized in dead-eyed tales of random violence, contained within an insular world of corrupted soul samples and gutter gospel. Suddenly, in the mid ’00s, the Mafia were everywhere with their Oscar-winning hit “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.” Juicy J, a founding member of the group, continues mainstream domination to this day, even lending his nihilistic charisma to Katy Perry on “Dark Horse.” Maybe not as hard out here for this pimp anymore.
