In October, when Artist Trust announced the first winners of a $50,000 annual award to artists for innovation, I complained that the two winners were conservative choices. Others disagreed vehemently. Underneath the specifics is an important debate: What constitutes innovation? Mere novelty? How is the playing field demarcated? Tonight the debate gets going in earnest, moderated by KUOW arts reporter Marcie Sillman, featuring Leo Berk and Margie Livingston (the winning artists), DXArts head Shawn Brixey, Portland-based writer Matthew Stadler, and On the Boards managing director Sarah Wilke.
