West Seattle's Heartland Cafe specializes in gut-filling Midwestern comfort food. The star of its celebrated breakfast menu: homemade apple fritters, which bear almost no resemblance to the bumpy grease bombs offered by Dunkin' Donuts and company. Heartland's fritters are racquetball-sized orbs, fried crispy on the outside, dense and bready on the inside, narcotically delicious.
