One of the many sucky aspects of Michael Jackson's death last year was how it hijacked what should've been a year commemorating the 25th anniversary of Prince's Purple Rain. With Jacko safely entombed, Prince's audiovisual blockbuster gets a well-earned victory lap at Central Cinema. The movie remains a ridiculous mess—psychodramatic band interactions played out with puppets! Aggressive misogyny played for laughs!—but the musical sequences will forever be enough to cause sane people to hyperventilate. (Central Cinema, 1411 21st Ave, 686-6684. 7 and 9:30 pm, $6, late show 21+.)
