Deep-Fried Pickles FOOD & DRINK
Deep-Fried Pickles

Fuck the New Year's resolutions, man. If you're gonna blow that promise to lose 10 pounds (or, you know, not have a heart attack in 2010), make sure you blow it on a beautiful basket of deep-fried pickles at the Peoples Pub in Ballard. Thick, juicy, delightfully tart spears of dill pickle are breaded and deep-fried to golden perfection—they're not too greasy and the crispy coating is surprisingly light. The best part: A fistful of pickles costs only $4 during happy hour (daily 3–7 pm and 10 pm–last call). (The Peoples Pub, 5429 Ballard Ave NW, 783-6521.)

When Kyle goes, he should also get the currywurst. Super delicious. I always order extra curry ketchup on the side.

I started salivating when I read that. Does that mean I'm gay?

I haven't been able to go there since I saw 2 roaches crawling on the bar... and the bartender just nonchalantly flicked them off with a coaster. Ew. I'm afraid the allure of deep fried pickles is just not enough.

Thank you, Lily. I'm 300 miles (one way) from those deep-friend pickles and was sorely tempted to make the drive, but now I'm cured.

I don't know if they've gotten better, but when I was there a couple years ago, the service was terrible and the food was pretty awful; the pickles weren't done right, either. The batter just fell off, leaving a warm, soggy, squishy pickle. Feh.

Haters. The pickles at PP are one of the most revered delights I have yet find in my nigh-on-four-decades of living. Sure, I could probably stand to get out more, because it's not clean, terribly lit, lousy with hipsters, the service is deplorable--pretty much the worst of both old and new Ballard.

But DAAAAAMN! those pickles are good. Let them cool for 3 minutes after they arrive or you'll singe the roof of your mouth. It will be the slowest 3 minutes of your life.

Bonus: People's Pub has exactly one really cool painting on the wall.

deep fried pickles are ridiculously simple to create at home, fyi. salt, cornmeal, milk, pickles, oil are all you need for an easy starter recipe.
