The Stranger

Before Robert Mapplethorpe started pissing off the religious right—hell, before he even really knew how to be a gay man in the world—he shot Polaroids. They're nothing like the formal, neoclassical images he made later; these are raw, exploratory, sexily unsteady. Imagine the shivers that went through photo scholar Sylvia Wolf when she rediscovered them. Later, Wolf became director of the Henry, which is also celebrating four other new shows with this party.
