Hot Chips OTHER
Hot Chips

The holy grail of chips and salsa has been located at Redwood on Capitol Hill. The chips are brought directly from the deep fryer, burning hot, plenty salty, with a squeeze of lime; they're entirely crispy, but they still have enough body that you know you're eating a tortilla. The salsa is pico de gallo–style, fresh and uncomplicated, made with organic tomatoes and onions and pickled jalapeños. Chips and salsa are not usually a thrill. These are shockingly, amazingly good. Your mouth will tell your brain that you're having a life-changing experience. (Redwood, 514 E Howell St, 329-1952. 4 pm–2 am, $4/$3 at happy hour, 21+.)

Chips and salsa are not usually a thrill in Seattle because y'all have apparently no fucking idea what they're supposed to taste like. The absence of good Tex-Mex up here is sad.

If a decent Tex-Mex restaurant ever opened in Seattle, it would make bank. You guys have no idea what you are missing.

Ranting about pico de gallo with pickled jalapenos and some fresh tortilla chips? It's brought out for free at every Mexican place in Austin while you wait for your drinks, except the pico won't have the pansy-ass pickled peppers- they will be fresh too.

Chips and salsa will totally be my eventual downfall into obesity.

La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard also fries their tortilla chips when you order them, and their pico de gallo is SUPERB.

There is good Mex-Mex though, La Carta De Oaxaca beats the pants off Tex-Mex anyday.

I do love Carta de Oaxaca. It's a pale shade of Curra's, Fonda San Miguel, or other interior Mexican restaurants in Austin, but still pretty damn good for Seattle.

Obviously I didn't move here for the Mexican food, but damn... I miss it. And bbq. BBQ!

I agree; Peter Piper was an idiot, pickled peppers are lame.

Mmm, habanero.

And then when someone from Austin does open an alleged Tex-Mex place here, it's that fucking horrible Austin Cantina thing that rightfully went out of business in Ballard. No flour tortillas? No hot sauce? Hey Zeus!!!

@14, yes. Just not in pico de gallo (which, in much of Mexico, doesn't have any chiles in it at all).

Gotta say--while the chips aren't great, the pico de gallo at La Cabana on Beacon Hill is excellent. And the rest of the menu is mighty fine. Baja Bistro has excellent fresh-fried chips.
