Max Tundra

Max Tundra (aka British solo musician Ben Jacobs) was easily the most astounding live performer I saw in a long weekend of way too many shows at SXSW. Onstage, he sings like a pitch-perfect Auto Tune–free R&B crooner, fluidly improvises on keys and guitar, jumping from one keyboard to another to melodica to glockenspiel to thumb piano and back, and jerks and flings his body around spasmodically, always landing just on time over his own off-kilter backing beats, pausing to dole out droll banter between songs. With Junior Boys. (Neumos, 925 E Pike St, 709-9467. 8 pm, $15, all ages.)

What no News of the Day today?

The US captain taken hostage by Somali pirates is now free btw.

How did we deal with pirates earlier, as in Thos. J. and Barbaries? Well we actually never put them out of busines until France took over Algeria. Not a helpful precedent.

Bomb Somali? Arm merchant ships?

Why not set up an internationally protected corridor with ships from many nations including some Moslem nations? Where is the fracking Saudi navy, the Indian navy and the Kenyan navy btw?

It's pretty hard to argue for against the USA dominating everything, if other nations like India, Kenya and S. Arabia aren't going to step up to international problems like these pirates.

Update -- per MSNBC, Navy seals effected a rescue of Capt. Philips, he is uninjured, and they also killed three of the pirates. The fourth one is taken (unkown if alive or dead).

Update:
fourth pirate alive US DOJ intends to charge him and try him. MSNBC analyst very obtuse about the jurisdiction of the USA we have the same jurisdiction over pirate crimes anywhere against anyone just like Spain has jurisdiction to try GW Bush for torture.

Comment: Obama gets a win, showing (a) smart use of force AND (b) rule of law.

And, look for an international multilateral type intervention into land bases of pirates soon.

Most of all a failed rescue would've hurt and this was avoided.

Oh and it's cool the capt. didn't die, too.

Final detail -- unconfirmed -- one of the pirates was on the navy ship negotiating whilst rescue operation was underway. But doubtful one would separate himself like that. Analysts praise USA for being underhanded and not negotiating in good faith w these scum, etc.
