K'naan MUSIC / AFRICAN HIP HOP
K'naan

Those who watched K'naan, "the dusty foot philosopher," open for Damian "Welcome to Jamrock" Marley a few years ago at the Showbox witnessed the birth of a new hiphop star. Originally from Somalia, and currently based in Toronto, K'naan makes a hiphop that is the meeting point of two musical cultures: black African and black American. On some tracks, he rhymes over hardcore hiphop beats; on other tracks, over thundering African beats; and on one track, over no beats. K'naan is the definition of an organic intellectual; he gives back with the knowledge of rap. (Neumos, 925 E Pike St, 709-9467. 8 pm, $10, all ages.)

Yeah and then there were those of us who witnessed said "birth" WAY before the Seattle hipsters did, by seeing him up at the Vancouver Folk (!!) Music Festival.

I'm glad that the other 4-letter 'f word' scares so many of you little shitheads so much - it allows me to learn about/support these artists in a much more conducive atmosphere than the bars where you insist on talking/yelling over the artists no matter how much you pay to get in and see them or how much you "love" them.

(Feist appeared @ VFMF before she started being accepted by the KEXP snobs too...and the list goes on - just make sure NOT to attend one of the best festivals in the region every July so I can keep these incredible musicians, the beautiful scenery and the very nice Canadian folk attending the fest to myself.)
