March for Marriage
Equality

Last week's glory was marred only by the freakish passage of California's Proposition 8, which seeks to revoke the marriage rights of the state's same-sex couples. But the outpouring of outrage that's greeted the hateful legislation (since when does the majority get to vote on the rights of a minority?) has been an awesome consolation prize, proving that marriage equality has made the leap from fringe obsession to American civil rights issue. Today, Seattle makes its feelings on the issue known. (Rally at noon in Volunteer Park, march to Westlake Center at 1 pm, rally at Westlake Center at 2 pm. Attention! This Suggest was written with the up-to-the-minute info of last Tuesday, and here's the final skinny on how today will play out: Rally at noon in Volunteer Park, march to Westlake Center at 1 pm, rally at Westlake Center at 2 pm.

(The 10:30 am meet is for "pre-festivities." If that word excites you, go then, by which I mean now.)

Exactly what I've said all along: You never, never, ever put people's civil rights up for a vote. Rights are guaranteed. How do you think the vote would have gone in 1960s Alabama - should the state constitution be amended to prohibit Negroes from riding in the front of the bus?

And would you ever see - should the state constitution be amended to prohibit Jews from using any library within the state?

Or - should the state constitution be amended disallowing Catholics to have more than two children?

This isn't even a legal issue. It's a question of protection for the rights of the minority. Any initiative that hints of banning civil rights for anyone should be shot down at once if not by the state registrar then by the courts. To even place shit like this on the ballot is totally un-American.
