(THEATER) There are good reasons to be ambivalent about this dark comedy (about eccentric narcissists who talk and talk while England slides toward disaster) by George Bernard Shaw: The characters are more symbols than people, the satire is smug, and the script is verbose. But Michael Winters is properly salty as a grumpy sea captain, Alexandra Tavares is charming as the not-actually-naive-after-all ingénue, and even though Shaw is a crank, he is, at times, the smartest and funniest crank around. (Intiman Theatre, 201 Mercer St, 269-1900. 8 pm, $10—$46.)
