The Stranger

(ART & BBQ) Retablos—a 500-year-old form of commissioned Mexican art—might be described as thanksgiving depictions of bad luck averted. (One example: a bright painting of a dapper, bottle-clutching gentleman being struck by a car. The accompanying inscription of thanks, translated from the Spanish: "Blessed is the Virgin of Guadalupe for saving me from dying when I was run over after leaving the bar very drunk.")
