Retablos de la Familia de Vilchis

(ART & BBQ) Retablos—a 500-year-old form of commissioned Mexican art—might be described as thanksgiving depictions of bad luck averted. (One example: a bright painting of a dapper, bottle-clutching gentleman being struck by a car. The accompanying inscription of thanks, translated from the Spanish: "Blessed is the Virgin of Guadalupe for saving me from dying when I was run over after leaving the bar very drunk.") Tonight, the opening of a show of the retablos of the Vilchis family of Mexico City; plus, barbecue. (Roy's BBQ, 4903 1/2 Rainier Ave S, 723-ROYS. 6–9 pm, free.)
