‘Darwin’s Nightmare’

(FILM) The decimation of hundreds of cichlid species unique to Central Africa's enormous Lake Victoria is, by now, a relatively well-known story. But what truly cements the Nile Perch's oily reign is not natural selection, but the economic and social interests binding the region's people. This Oscar-nominated documentary paints a detailed and gruesome picture of the people who live and die by the Tanzanian fish trade. (Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave, 267-5380. 7 and 9 pm, $5–$8.)
