(KING OF META-COMEDY) For Barry, conventional jokes are mere springboards for him to scrutinize the mechanics of said jokes, then to analyze the crowd reaction, and finally engage in self-aggrandizement over his response (making the boast somehow seem self-deprecating). With each hyper-aware, sotto-voce dissection, Barry's observations accrue hilarity, so that all the improvised meta-commentary looms larger and funnier than the actual joke, which you've already forgotten.
