Hugo House Spelling Bee

Automatic spell-check has reduced spelling things the old fashioned way—i.e., out loud, with your mouth—to a treasured novelty, like polar bears. Literary nonprofit Hugo House is hosting a celebrity spelling bee fundraiser featuring, among others, author Stacey Levine, DJ Riz Rollins, musician John Roderick, poet and Hugo House founder Frances McCue, and The Stranger’s own Paul Constant and David Schmader. And this spelling bee comes with a twist: When a contestant makes a mistake, they’ll rely on the generous, boozed-up audience to buy them chances to cheat. (Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave, www.hugohouse.org, 7:30 pm, $25/$50 for a reserved table and pre-party with celebrity guests, all ages)

Can we force the contestants to drink shots before each turn?
