On the other hand DM could be a bizarrely provincial manifestation of our society's current lust for attention and acknowledgement taken to its logical conclusion. An unfunny, anonymous individual literally willing to get up and do anything, anything, including non-sequitur malaprops (not really "malaprops" since the words are mainly mispronounced and not misued in a humorous way) and nonsensical observations. But definitely "odd". Seattle! Your latest claim to fame! I hope everybody is in on the joke.
Dina Martina is not a "drag queen." Go see her again, to begin to appreciate the craft, skill, artistic intent manifested in her show. The professionalism is easy to miss because it all seems so easy-peasy-- but it's boggling, really. Dina is one of TWO Stranger Genius winners on that tiny, beery stage. The music is all crazy-good, and Chris Jeffries plays it LIVE. That's NOT karaoke, Paul, in any sense. Every bumble, each moment of flighty confusion-- it's all perfectly controlled and intentional. Yes, she can play with an unruly crowd, but she isn't a character reciting one-liners, damnit, and she isn't improvising. She is a world class show(man), and a high priestess. I love her. That said, I've had good shows mostly ruined by elbowing guffawers, too-- my condolences and empathy. But go back and see her again. You'll be glad, and you'll be printing a retraction, I promise.
p.s. I'm not affiliated with the show or venue. I'm just a passionate fan of excellent theater - and so, of Dina Martina. Thanks for supporting live shows in Seattle.
