Ms. Graves-I will start by saying I do not know you nor have we ever met. I feel compelled to write these comments due to the inordinate amount of talk(mostly complaints) I hear from "art world" people about you and your column. That said-let me start by saying that the perception of you as a self appointed art celebrity locally is quite amusing. Your ability to operate with such a smug and self important perception of yourself and your opinion is laughable. I have been told you have no formal education in Art History or critical thought and came to us from a Tacoma newspaper as a 'run-of-the-mill' reporter.Interesting...It strikes me as one of those "it all makes sense" moments when you put it all together.
The purpose is to not let myself take cheap shots at you-like commenting on your new weight loss or your black cocktail dresses for man hunting at TARL openings, etc. that people are talking about(okay, maybe one cheap shot) but to focus on the one thing I find truly offensive about your "schtick". With all your solicitous alignments and flirtations of art world "characters"(Scott Lawrimore or Billy Howard for example), opining about the lame NW collectors and their lack of support for the "fabulous"(hipster) art scene here-your lack of attention and focus on the big picture of everything that is going on in the Northwest art world is ridiculous. To wax on about the brilliant Michael Jackson movie(embarassing, darling) or feature a Martin Creed article this week (at the Western Bridge) when the local galleries, museums, and especially artists in the area are in need of support and exposure more than ever is down right shameful. In case you've forgotten you called the True's(owners of Western Bridge) dilettantes in recent history and neither the Western Bridge nor Mr. Creed need the press. Devoting a full page article to Mr. Creed when he has been critiqued and celebrated by the real deal art world players 10 years running is a 'call-in'...straight up. Do your job and do it well, Ms. Graves! Represent intelligently with fairness and objectivity ALL that is going on in the area-whether you personally like it or not. Do the right thing and help anybody in the arts with the courage to forge ahead in this terrible economy. Just because you and your "Holly Go Lightly" fantasy you're living doesn't quite fit with anything but the hipster scene you are so desperately in love with-be a good reporter and make things interesting and smart despite of your personal preferences-if you're smart enough. Oh-and BTW-I love Dogs.

Hibrow...

(my phone just 'corrected' your name to 'hubris')

Too funny.

You sound really interesting. I'd love to chat with you sometime about art, what we do, what you do, what jen does, what western bridge does, etc.

I'm at the gallery wed-sat, 11-5:30. Feel free to drop in anytime.

Warmth,
Scott Lawrimore

Hibrow -

You obviously have many Important Opinions about art. It's too bad that they're all obscured by your need to bitch-slap Jen Graves.

Holy shit, 'Hibrow,' that's a long and ridiculous comment!

What the fuck?!

Please wait...
