In 1996 on the cover of the 4th issue of No Depression magazine was a photo of Hank Williams with two black faced actors. The story was about Honey Wilds and his blackface comedy act which is a lost chapter in Nashville's considerable music past. In the Editors Note of the following issue ND editor Grant Alden wrote this: In the silence we heard only whispers. Not exactly the response Iād imagined when we chose to put a previously unpublished photograph of two blackface comedians and Hank Williams on the cover of our last issue.
In the end, we received just one letter (and only a week ago, at that), along with muffled complaints from a few outlets. And I have no idea what that means....
....One thing that is unmistakable in even a cursory glance at the landscape of country music is its pale complexion.
Well, what are we to do with that?
Talk about it, for starters.
More than a few parts of American history arenāt very pretty. The people who originally lived on this continent have largely come to a bad and ugly end. Ancestors of the slaves imported to work that stolen land havenāt fared much better. And, from my vantage point temporarily installed in Southern California, it is frightening to see the emergence of a brown-skinned servant class.

I've never even heard of Hanna Hoch, however if anyone wants to compare my work to any other artist's work, I don't care, but at least get my fucking name right!
The title of the event is stupidly provocative. We have to talk race but getting oh-so-outre about it is not the way to encourage anything other than spectacle. Maybe that's all Place cares about, I don't know. Maybe other artists / writers will try again. Not that content can't be honest, but really ... coons? That's your best?
The Minstrel Show Revisited will be performed Feb 20-22nd 2014 at Spectrum Dance Theater. Maybe this art can be shown at the theater during this weekend??? The title of the exhibit could potentially fit right in, pending dance master Donald Byrd's approval..... Just a thought. http://spectrumdance.org/
