How Can Artists Make Work About Prison?

I've been arrested in Seattle, and placed in isolation for three days.

Although there's a window at the entry of the cell I rarely looked out of it. There was also a window to the outside world, which I rarely looked out of. The primary reason was that you are basically looking out a window where that are nothing more than a series of more windows.

I was given a book to read, don't recall what it was. Most of the time I paced the floors. On the second day I began seeing shadows, and was talking to myself a bit.

I felt like I was losing my mind.

Isolation is torture. If after three days I was getting looped out of my head, I would imagine individuals who are in isolation for weeks, months or year, they are out of their fucking mind.

I suggest the artist capture the truth about isolation, not just one hour. Find some individuals who will endure at least 3 days of isolation, and watch where that takes you.

Peace out.

Strange to use Oubliette as the name. An Oubliette was a small dungeon within a larger dungeon, where the politically powerful "disappeared" their rivals . This was often done with a Carte Blanche, which allowed anyone, nobles & commoners alike, to be taken without any due process or any hope of ever getting out. They are dropped into the Oubliette where no one knew who they were and left to die. No one knew what happened to them on the outside. Once they were placed in there no one saw them again, not even the gaolers, hence the name.

So if these "prisoners" are watched through videos and are allowed to leave eventually, then they are not in the Oubliette.

Dear Shirtless - I certainly thought about putting folks in isolation for longer than an hour but three days? That is asking an awful lot of all the participants - also, I'd have to feed them and care for them. That was not my agenda here. They acted out the idea of long-term isolation and, even at an hour, it was more than effective for several of them.

Please wait...
