Kurt B. Reighley

Kurt B. Reighley ("Border Radio: Roots & Americana") is a Seattle-based writer, DJ, and entertainer. Raised in Virginia, educated in Indiana, and schooled by New York City, he has been writing about popular music since 1989, during the course of which time he has interviewed such diverse icons as Mel Tormé, Kylie Minogue, Loretta Lynn, and Marilyn Manson. In addition to The Stranger, his work can currently be found in The Advocate, Time Out New York, and No Depression; he has also contributed to Rolling Stone and Details, and is the author of three books, the most recent of which is Looking for the Perfect Beat: The Art & Culture of the DJ (MTV/Pocket Books, 2001). As DJ El Toro, he spins a wide variety of music, from Eminem to "Mah Na Mah Na," at various Emerald City watering holes; he has also plied this questionable trade with artists including Nina Hagen, Eddie Vedder, Scissor Sisters, Dave Matthews Band, and, um, Village People. In his copious free time, he sings and plays autoharp for Purty Mouth, Seattle's premier almost all-gay country band. He is currently researching a book about bacon, and developing a new cabaret persona: "Piglét, France's greatest porcine illusionist."
