Link?

It's surprising this doesn't happen more often. I'm guessing there's been at least some attempt to suicide-proof it.
2
Ah yes, the link! Fixed.
3
dude, lot's of people commit suicide every day in America.

Some of them here.

Heck, a UW prof just ran into a Dick's drive in up in Lake City and got a DUI for it.

That's a heck of a lot closer than NYC or that neck of the woods.
4
2+ years tuition at Yale wasted - ouch. bet he changed his mind once he jumped.
5
@1, obviously you've never been there. It would be hard to imagine how it could be made any more suicide-proof.
7
he apologized?
Well I have trouble taking that seriously -- there's all too much faux politeness these days.

"Oh and excuse me for not cleaning up the splatter, too. I do beg your pardon."
8
Did he die?
9
@8: That's usually what "Man Plunges to His Death" means, yeah.
10
@7

It's almost like he was suffering under the weight of extreme and unwarranted guilt. What's that called? Oh, yeah, depression.
11
Naw he didn't die. What's 86 floors....

Seriously...WTF kind of question was that?!

This story is an object lesson to you all, and it proves my opinions to be correct.
13
So sad. Such a tragedy. What a waste of youthful potential. But man, you decide you gotta go, ain't much more hardcore than taking the eighty-sixth floor plummet.
14
@5 - I went up there when I was little, but haven't been up since. I didn't register suicide barriers at the time. I only remember it wasn't "throwing pennies" proof.
15
All I can say is, that's just so sad.
16
Yeah, they've got big ol' honkin' suicide prevention fences all over the 86th floor deck.

What I find strange is that according to the link, there were only seven other people up there. Last time I was there, it took me an hour in line to get to the top, and it was full of people. But that was mid-May, not late March.

BTW, the view from the top of 30 Rock is better.
17
I'm surprised he didn't kill anyone. The streets around are usually pretty crowded.
19
Really tragic...and so young, too. OK, what's up with all these Ivy League suicides all of a sudden?
20
Very tragic, yes. But you really can't use "man" and "his dorm room" in the same sentence.
21
Anybody got pics of him on the ground?

19- Most Ivy League students are effete, sheltered, privileged white kids with awful parents.
22
Why are you posting this?

Few people have survived a suicide attempt by jumping from the Golden Gate. One survivor said that as soon as he jumped he realized that he'd made a terrible mistake. Makes me wonder how many other folks who jumped had the same thought. Was also amazed to discover that on average 2 - 3 people a month kill themselves by jumping from the Golden Gate.
25
@23: Aaaaach... I want to hear whether this was gay bashed depression. I don't want to hear how inspired or historic. If Cf is sad, I want to help because he's an asset. For crying out loud.
26
Why kill yourself? Gee, no jobs, you live in a country that is committed to endless wars either political party want to end, over half the country are idiots who think the planet is 6000 years old.

You know what? Suicide doesn't sound all that bad now when you think about it.
27
In the "too much information" department: for those of you wondering about the splatter when he hit the ground, he probably didn't hit the ground. The building is much wider at the base than it is at the top, which means they usually don't make it all the way down to the ground.
28
@27, he did hit the ground, in front of an entrance to a Bank of America branch. I saw a photo of the body covered on the sidewalk. (Really, it was more like an uneven mound. The word "shattered" was used to describe what happened on impact.)

There were pedestrians nearby. A guy ran over and covered the body with his umbrella.
29
Ugh. Thank you for traumatizing complete strangers. If you want to die, please do it somewhere secluded, maybe on a country road, in the woods, or in your own home.

Every time I hear about a subway suicide in this city, I think of the driver who had to witness it firsthand. At least two of my co-workers were on trains that were stopped by suicides; one described the driver as acting preternaturally normal as he let out passengers, completely white in the face, and in the other incident, the driver just let out blood-curdling screams over and over. Screw you.
30
Jesus, kill yourself at home like a normal person!

Please wait...
