No one is suggesting that illegal immigration is a good thing. No one *wants* illegal immigrants to get a free pass. But at the same time, we don't want unconstitutional, race-baiting legislation like the Arizona law to get a free pass either. The solution is comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level, and unless we put pressure on the politicians to take up this issue, it ain't gonna happen.

@1: Oh no, many immigrants from Mexico are actually fairly tolerant (and some outright supportive) of LGBT citizens and rights. The border state of Coahuila has Civil Unions, Sonora, which borders AZ, is expected to pass a similar law by the end of 2010 or start of 2011, Baja California and Chihuahua are also intensely supportive of LGBT rights at the top level, both expecting in 2011/12 a partial DP-type bill to closely mimic Sonora. Nuevo Leon is potentially the first state to go full-bore and ratify marriage equality in 2011, if we call the DF a non-state.

Support may stop at marriage, but most immigrants I've known, recent, long-term and former, have been exceedingly kind and friendly, quite warm, really, to gay folks. The most anti-gay are the indios, but they comprise an incredibly insignificant portion of immigrants to the US and would rather live in the prairies and woods in smaller towns and cities.

You should travel to Mexico! It's fun! Just don't get involved in the drug trade or the cartel-run cab companies. Most legit city cabs (dispatched via a central line) can tell you what part of town is bad.

The 10th Annual March for Immigrant Rights is not just about pushing forward any reform, it's about demanding a just and dignified reform that respects human rights and opposes enforcement only tactics. It's important to march in Seattle as King county is one of the few to pass a local ordinance against ICE collaboration with local police. Don't just march against Arizona, march for Washington as an example of grassroots communities transforming policy from the bottom up!

The May 1st rallies are a call for the rights of all people – human rights, civil rights, economic justice. Come stand with us. Cast aside cynicism. We can build a better world. Past generations have done it. It does take creativity, work, and acting on ones hope. Compassion is sexy.

Coming from immigrants (some legal), who have been in the U.S. since the 20s, I can say, yes, we still dress as well as we can, which may account for the “colorful” stereotyping, but we’re also realistic. If we’d had a coat of arms it would have read: “In 30 years we’ll be trying to teach your kids proper English because you will become illiterate in your own language.” That text would have been placed underneath a picture of a Cuban guy smoking a cigar and a raven-haired hot tamale decked out for an evening of romance and Flamenco.

We’re not the “official” scapegoat culture anymore, though we still remember that it once was fun like that. Before they migrated with their alien culture to the West Coast, my parents received a great education in NY public schools. Dad got a good boost through college on the GI Bill. Then he taught English to children of the folks who fled to the West to escape the alien hordes coming in from the East. (Now those students did well--at least the ones who paid attention in class.) I always thought this is how we picked up our language skills as kids. But now I’m thinking those skills may have been inherited--my grandfather spoke English with a very strong accent, yet managed to use the language much better than any of you do. At least, you could understand his arguments. He didn’t type, though--that was a woman’s job.
