Golden Gardens is the best. The walk down from the nearest busstop is gorgeous too.

Aren't there supposed to be several more people in that scene - a woman holding a parasol, a reclining man wearing a striped shirt? And why is it so sharp and clear?

And Vancouver better than all of them. I think Alki is a wasted opportunity. No tourism infrastructure. Golden Gardens is the best beach in Seattle.

@10 - Last night was the first time I ever watched the sunset in Seattle after 13 years. However, within those 13 years, I've watched the sunset from English Bay in Vancouver many times. It's much easier for me to get to English Bay when I'm in Vancouver than it is to get to Alki or Golden Gardens. I still prefer to go to English Bay to watch the sunset than anywhere in Seattle.

Alki Beach is awful. West Seattle in general is awful.

Lincoln Park in West Seattle is great -- there are half a dozen bus lines that go there. The lower park is a great place to watch the sunset over the Olympics.

I remember Discovery Park being the urban park in which one could lose themselves. It was sublime. Alki after 2a on a moonlit night is tough to beat.

@7: Madison Beach is super easy to get to by the 11, I go there and the arboretum from downtown when I get off work early. Although if you're far from the 11 you've still got a problem.

Discovery (but it's a hell of a hike to the beach) > Golden Gardens > Madison > Carkeek > Alki (but Alki wins the Sunset Battle, if you're in the areas with a good view of downtown AND the mountains).

Dan, No one doubts that Madison Beach is weak, but honestly Alki is in West Seattle. All there is in West Seattle is Alki and people who live there and think Alki is the coolest thing, sort of like people in Queen Anne who call Queen Anne Ave. "The Ave."
Madison is in richy white neighborhood which granted all three are, at least there are some legitimate and local and amazing restaurants near Gasworks. Also you can Kayak TO gasworks from Aqua Verde, and it is in fremont and closish to ballard. More busses go to and from, only the 11 goes near madison and how you get to West Seattle on a bus is beyond me.

And if it is just parks, including parks that are not on the water than Volunteer wins, never in one place will you find my hetero, gay, and trans prostitutes, and heroin dealers at night. Plus it is the best place to chill with a group.

MAGNUSON
MAGNUSON wins hands down it is Huge, has a new "fake" real habitat type thing, lots of beaches, great view of Mount Raineer, great places to keg if you're underage, and not too many meth deals go down. It also has a unused warehouse you can break into, and a lot of other fun stuff i can't incriminate myself by posting.

West Seattle and Alki is the best walking escape within the city.

At the west tip of Alki Ave, did anyone else see the bald eagle being threatened by a lot of crows in the tree on 63rd & Alki? Forgot how big those eagles are. If they only knew of all the micro-dogs in Capitol Hill they could dine on.

Best park in the city is Carkeek, though. No contest.

Also, the King County Water Taxi is right there in downtown if you want to get to the tip of Alki in 10 minutes. It's 3 bucks each way, and they take (and strongly prefer) Orca cards. With a monthly pass, it's your pass value less than $3 each time. And they take bikes. If they only ran more frequently than once an hour on the weekends...

seattle has parks that collectively are wonderful and add up to being about 100x better for parks than most cities.

in fact, if there was no seattle here, this whole area would be a national park full of campgrounds and little park service ferries, a wonderland of trails to lakes and the sound and up and down all the hills, kind of a NW Arcadia national park.

Damn those Dennys, bringing all the people here!

Alki is pretty great for simply a sunny picnic and reading books by the water. I don't think that can be denied. As for food options and proximity, it might go down a few pegs relative to other parks.

Gasworks was the site of lots of kite flying, picnics and fireworks from my college days. It's probably not the best, but those memories make it win for me. Plus I loved it when they closed it down and then reopened with "Please Don't Eat the Dirt" signs.

Madison is the best of the above named for swimming when it's hot. Alki is a total clusterfuck anytime it's even remotely sunny.

@24 The water taxi goes to the Duwamish Head, a couple miles east of Alki point, where the beaches are. It's a quick bike ride, though, and it's free to bring your bike aboard the water taxi.

I like walking the loop in the evening at Seward park with my dog, and then hitting up some view spots (and some greenery) on the ride back north around Lake Washington Blvd. I live right by Golden Gardens but it gets too crowded for my liking. I go to Carkeek instead or even Richmond Beach if I want to stick around the north end.
