The main if not only translations given for pole/mique into English in two-way dictionaries will actually be "controversial" or "contentious." A polemic (i.e. an argument) would be something like re/quisitoire or plaidoyer in French. It's safe to say that the French comment about this ad was simply mistranslated by someone who didn't bother to look up a word that "seemed" obvious; all it means is "controversial," no opacity intended.
