Detroit is an example of what happens to a city when unions and the Democratic Party have unfettered control.
The occasional Republican mayor has saved New York from a similar fate.
Seattle hipsters would love to go down the same road as Detroit, they are just so damn inept at even one-party rule that it is taking them a little longer to get there....

Anybody else remember the New Deal back during Great Depression 1.0? I mean, I can't be the only one with a junior high school education. Anyways, I remember as a tiny schoolkid being taught that the New Deal/WPA is why Washington has so many fantastic parks. Course, work camps kinda creep me out, but so long as they're not forced and you can get health care and three squares a day...maybe natural restoration could be part of the New Green Economy the media loves to talk about. Just a weird thought before my coffee kicks in and I come to my senses, it's early yet, and on a hung-the-fuck-over Monday.

@1: Glad to see that you understand economics at all. My city, Chicago, is somehow doing pretty damn good, despite being heavily Democratic and union-strong. You try to make point?
Personally, I blame the chronic suckiness of the Lions. That can't be good for them.

Good Morning Charles,
It is extraordinary how tragic the City of Detroit's decline is. You may have seen this photo montage published in the New York Times Magazine last year. It's now a coffee table book:

In 1950, the population was 1.8 million. Today it is less than 900,000. In 1950, it was the figurative engine that "drove" the American economic juggernaut. Today, it a shell of that with an unemployment rate of nearly 30% (the mayor claims it is closer to 50%). If there is any visible evidence of America's industrial demise, Detroit is the template. And, there is really no conceivable solution or "reversal" of it's fortune in the immediate future. America is no longer a producer but merely just consumes. China is the factory of the world. Unless we, Americans tighten our belt (lose weight), reproduce less (have fewer children) and consume fewer goods, we're in for a world of hurt. Afraid to say this but behavioral change is in order.

@1 How about economic globalization, crime, and corruption? Oh, and self-imposed segregation. EXTREME self-imposed segregation.

Ooooh, time to plant some food crops! And flowers! A few goat and sheep paddocks, too! :D

Please wait...
